Although the SKS used an intermediate cartridge in common with the new breed of assault rifle, the design was really traditional styling. This confluence of design worked well. With the SKS internal magazine, you can test that magazine with that rifle, be sure it will work, and you're good to go. Since it only holds 10 rounds anyway, it wasn't considered a huge difference between stripper clip feed and detachable magazines.
